Collecting production toys is one thing. Understanding the terminology and lingo that goes on within the hobby is another.

Here you will find a comprehensive glossary on the technical terms that you may come across on your journey as a Lord of the Rings toy collector.

Above all, the Lord of the Rings Toy Archive seeks to teach collectors of the hobby. That includes the terminology and nuances that goes along with collecting this toy line. In fact many of the terms used within are portable to other toy lines that used similar manufacturing methods.

Terminology	Description
CONCEPT ART	An artists rendering of what a character will look like as an action figure.
CONCEPT MODEL	Very early prototype to help artist visualize the model.
FACTORY DATE STAMP	During production, each packaged figure is stamped with what is called a "date stamp".

FINAL ENGINEERING PILOT	Also referred to as pre-production samples.
FIRST SHOT	Same as Test Shot. A test figure made from the factories steel molds, in order to "test functionality and look for imperfections".
HARD COPY (HC)	A resin prototype made from an original mold.
INJECTION MOLDING	A process of melting plastic into steel factory molds for figure making.
